Organic Patchouli Essential Oil (50ml)

Organic Patchouli Essential Oil (50ml)

A rich, earthy oil with a deep, exotic character that only improves with age

Patchouli belongs to the mint family, native to Malaysia and India, where it is known as puchaput. The name patchouli itself derives from the Tamil pachchai ilai meaning simply "green leaf." The young leaves are harvested, dried, and fermented before steam distillation, a process that gives Patchouli its characteristic depth and complexity. Unusually, this is an oil that genuinely improves in fragrance and richness with age.

Historically Indian cashmere shawls were packed with dried patchouli leaves before export to Victorian England - not just for the fragrance, but to protect from moths. The distinctive scent became so associated with genuine Indian cashmere that English buyers would refuse shawls that didn't carry it. In the 1960s and 70s, patchouli became iconic in Western counterculture, and it remains one of the most recognisable and evocative essential oil fragrances in the world.

In Eastern countries, patchouli has long been used in potpourris and sachets placed between linens and clothing - valued for its fragrance and its natural insect-repelling properties.
